Boat Lettering
Located in Port Townsend, WA USA (The “Wooden Boat Capital of The West Coast”) Whalesong Signs serves the unique niche of hand-painted maritime lettering and carving.
Customers work with us to dial in a custom or existing design. Once the design is finalized, the name is painted by hand (or gilded/carved) onto the vessel. Custom name-boards are also a focus of ours.
Gold Leaf
Working with real 23 and 24kt Gold Leaf, we offer a vast array of gold leaf applications. Gold leaf is real gold that is hammered down to be about 200 times thinner than a human hair folicle! Its a classic, timeless medium, that has been used as ornamentation for thousands of years. We can gold leaf directly onto a surface, onto carved signage as well as architectural elements. For boats, we gild cove stripes, nameboards, transoms, etc.
Carved signs
Carved lettering into wood is a great way to showcase a name, design or logo. Carved teak nameboards are a beautiful way to honor a vessel with a traditional aesthetic. Carved signs become a legacy piece that are long-lasting, highlighting an ambiance of quality when viewed. We use woods like teak, iroko and mahoganies for maritime signs. On land, mostly cedar and redwood.
